How often should you really clean your air ducts?
The NADCA guidelines, and when to break them for allergies, pets, and renovations.
The industry standard answer is every three to five years. That's the NADCA-aligned baseline for an average home with no unusual conditions: no pets, no smokers, no recent construction, and a filter that actually gets changed on schedule.
When you should clean more often
Every two years is a better target if you have shedding pets, someone in the house with asthma or seasonal allergies, or a system that runs nearly year-round in a humid climate.
Clean immediately — regardless of the calendar — after a renovation, after water damage or a roof leak near ductwork, if you see visible dust puffing from registers, or if you smell a musty odor when the system first kicks on.
When you can wait
A newer, well-sealed home with high-MERV filters changed every 90 days can comfortably go the full five years. A camera inspection is the honest way to decide — if the trunk line is clean, we tell you so and you keep your money.
The bottom line
Use three to five years as your default, tighten to two if you have pets or allergies, and treat any smell, visible dust, or post-construction dust as a reason to book now rather than wait.
